uBreakiFix Pins: Gamifying Employee Success
How do we get uBreakiFix employees excited about their success?
uBreakiFix needed a way to reward employees beyond pizza parties and wall mounted awards. When I was approached with this project we realized pretty quickly that any sort of financial award system or contests were just too difficult to implement across both corporate and franchisee stores. UBIF needed a solution that was flexible, affordable, and above all FUN for employees.
I interviewed several employees about what might interest them and a lot of the answers were just out of reach, usually for reasons of cost and turn around time. But one employee in particular showed me their pin collection, proudly affixed to their messenger bag and I knew we had found our solve.
Working alongside uBreakiFix leadership we crafted categories for awards that aligned with their objectives for the coming quarters. I took those simple metrics and translated them into pixelated pin designs that fit with their techie culture and common fandoms.
Tenure Awards
Of course no one’s staying at their workplace for a pin, but it’s nice to get something physical instead of another congratulatory email. Some classic chess pieces were used to signify prestige and a slice of refinement that rose above the other awards.
‘Get’r Done’ Awards
Consumer retail is HARD. It can be even harder when the product your selling is customer’s own tech (just in working condition). So we decided to acknowledge all the ways some employees go above and beyond to find solutions and keep customers happy.
‘Hero We Deserve’ Awards
It isn’t always just about the customers, sometimes it’s about helping each other. For the employees who see their coworkers struggling and choose to do something we created these hero awards based on some of our favorite super stories that persist today. Of course, licensing those actual heroes likenes would have proven difficult, but I worked with images that alluded to their familiar visuals while avoiding any risky appropriation.
